Company History
Hank Roland Johnson has always been passionate about chemical engineering and business management. After graduating from college and serving in the U.S. military, Hank started his professional career at IBM. After transitioning to the inks and coatings market to take advantage of the rapidly growing packaging sector, he launched Merit Ink & Coating with bi-coastal facilities in Atlanta and Los Angeles.
In 2011, Hank founded Roland Coatings to focus solely on the food packaging sector. He began to notice a growing interest in eco-friendly food packaging, and in 2020, invested in developing environmentally friendly and sustainable coating alternatives for consumers. Roland Coatings has since become more than just a print and converter supplier, working diligently with clients to achieve sustainable growth while fueling genuine innovation.
Today, younger, eco-conscious consumers actively seek out sustainable packaging options from trusted brands like ours. In response to this growing demand, Roland Coatings developed a pro-compostable coating for linerless thermal adhesive labels. Such labels meet the needs of retail, healthcare, and food and beverage industries, providing an ideal solution for brands wanting to pursue sustainable packaging.
Meet The Team
Hank Johnson
Throughout his career, Hank has focused his efforts on advancements in inks and coatings for the packaging and consumables markets. Leveraging his chemical engineering education and successful business management background, Hank has evolved with the larger industry, helping to develop security inks for packaging integrity, thermal-reactive inks and coatings, and more.
When not at the office, Hank enjoys sipping a glass of wine and spending quality time with Billie Jo, his loyal Golden Retriever.
Michelle Conard
In 2020, Hank’s daughter, Michelle, officially joined the Roland Coatings team. From her early beginnings working with her father, Michelle has fond memories of spending her summers during college in Atlanta preparing drawdowns for the Merit Ink & Coating laboratories. After graduating from college, Michelle spent several years spearheading the company’s first certification process for ISO 9001. Her corporate communications and environmental science background helped Roland Coatings build a product portfolio with greater sustainability, marketing to a more diverse clientele.
Michelle enjoys watching movies, spending time with her family, reading history books, and hiking with her Australian Cattle Dog, Luna.

Sustainable Packaging Coalition
The Sustainable Packaging Coalition (SPC) aims to help its members collaborate, educate, and take action to create sustainable packaging solutions. The membership-based organization works across the packaging value chain, and as such, SPC is able to work harmoniously to create actionable outputs for sustainable packaging alternatives. While every collaborative may have a unique objective, the ultimate goal is to help SPC members identify and navigate opportunities for addressing the common challenges associated with sustainable packaging.
Since 2021, Roland Coatings has been an active SPC member in their Compostable Packaging Collaborative working group.
